II: Environmental Protection Action

From 2000 to 2007, diverse things have been done to improve the environment. Among these actions, the following are noteworthy:

• Visits from people from different entities: every year visits from different entities around the city are carried out. The purpose is to detect environmental impacts as a result of port activity. A commission made up of the Port Captain, the Navy and API tour the port area looking for environmental problems derived from consigned areas of Mazatlan’s port.

• The We Want a Clean Mazatlan campaign. City Hall, the Navy, API and service providers of the port have cleaned various parts of the port. Work began on Creston Hill, where the light house is located. Subsequently, the navigation channels, the beaches of Stone Island and Goat Island, among other places, have been cleaned up.

III: Support for Culture

Each year the Port of Mazatlan provides a place for the construction of Carnival floats that are used in the traditional Carnival parade and we facilitate things for Carnival organizers by providing temporary parking for these floats. We also loan equipment for the transportation of people from the cruise ships that arrive.

IV: Support for Sports

Just like with Carnival, each year a Marathon race is held in Mazatlan, as well as a Triathlon and Half Marathon. It has a big impact in the North West area of the country. The Port of Mazatlan helps out with these sport activities by transporting passengers. From 2000 to 2004, the Governor's Nautical Cup was held in the navigation canal and dock areas. API facilities were loaned out so that the public could watch this important sporting event.

V: Support for Education

Each year we handle visits by more than 1,000 students from all levels. We take them on a tour of the port installations. We participate in student congresses that are held in Mazatlan.

VI: Other Support Offered

At the cruise ship passenger terminal we offer many organizations rent free space for their modules. Among the many groups offered such an opportunity are the Red Cross and Women Who Are Heads of Family. We also have collection boxes for the maintenance of the city's cathedral and we help support an orphanage by loaning module space to the Bimbo bread company who collect and deliver the funds to the orphanage.
